Custom 3D Printer

I took a Sovol SV04 and modified it heavily modified to be able to print larger models in higher performance materials. It has build volume of 300x600x300mm(12"x24"X12") and can print materials such as nylon, ASA and polycarbonate. I modified this 3D printer in order to print a prototype of my snowshoe in one piece in a very durable high impact resistant material.

Heated Buildplate

The buildplate is made of a 12"x24"x1/8" sheet of aluminum. I used two 250mmx250mm silicone heaters on one side with insulation on top of the heaters. Thermal fuses were connected to the silicone heaters to cut power if they got overheated. On the other side two sheet magnets were glued on to the surface. This allows me to use magnetic build surfaces with the buildplate.

Control Board and Firmware

I replaced the original control board with a Big Tree Tech Manta M5P board which allows me to use Klipper firmware with the 3D printer. Klipper has become one of the most widely used firmware systems in 3D printing. In order to use an IDEX printer with Klipper, I wrote custom code that will allow the printer to work with Klipper.

Heated Enclosure

Certain materials need to be printed in a heated environment ensure strong layer adhesion and to prevent warping. In order to make strong 3D prints I needed to use materials that required a heated chamber. I used insulation foam board to make an enclosure. I added an exhaust port with a fan, a heating element with a blower, lights and thermistors to monitor the heat. I added a camera to monitor the print with the 3d printer is enclosed. This is all controlled by a second control board.
